REPORTED STAND BY AMBASSADORS

(Received May 27, 1 a.m.) LONDON, May 26.

The Tokyo correspondent of the British United Press says it is reliably reported that the ambassadors to Berlin and Rome declined to convey to the Axis governments Japan’s decision to avoid definite commitments in Europe. The ambassadors are reported to have tendered their resignations on the ground that their usefulness is ended. The Prime Minister (Baron Hiranuma) and the Foreign Minister (Mr Arita) are attempting t to dissuade them, because Mr Arita’s position might be affected.

An Independent Cable Service message from Tokyo says it is reported that the ambassadors resigned after Japan’s decision not to co-operate closely with the Axis Powers. Baron Hiranuma has not yet accepted their resignations and is trying to induce them to retain office.
