In Town And Out

“If Government Lasts” Electors of Christchurch South (says The Christchurch Star-Sun) were startled on Wednesday night when a qualification was put to the Government’s progress by Mr J. A. Lee, M.P. “You can rest assured that .in the future—if the Labour Government lasts this year—the London funds will be built up in such a way as to be ample for all of New Zealand’s needs,” declared Mr Lee.

Miniature Rifle Shooting “Some persons think that miniature rifle shooting is merely pea-rifle shooting, but this is definitely not the case,” stated Mr W. McChesney at a meeting of the Southland Technical College Board of Managers last night when it was decided to purchase three rifles for the school, which are to be available to the Collegiate Miniature Rifle Club. This club is composed of present and past pupils of the college. Mr McChesney added that many of the best rifle shots in New Zealand had had training on a miniature rifle range. He thought it was a step in the right direction to give practical assistance to the club in this way.

Exhibitor’s Generosity Because the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association experienced a loss on its recent winter show, one of the successful exhibitors has returned his prize money as a donation to the funds of the association. Appreciation of this action was expressed yesterday by the secretary of the association (Mr A. L. Adamson). Boer Hymn Book \

A Boer hymn book, picked up on a South African battlefield by a New Zealand soldier during the Boer War, has been presented to the Southland Museum. The book, a little, brown, leather-bound volume, is, apart from a few stains on the binding, in quite good condition. Inter-communication System Consideration to a proposal to purchase an inter-communication system to be used in the Southland Technical College was given last night at a meeting of the Board of Managers and the matter was referred to the finance committee, with power to act. The principal (Mr C. A. Stewart) said that when an outside speaker visited the school he had to be asked if he were prepared to give two addresses at different times because the assembly hall accommodated only l about half the pupils of the college. College Kitchen

As a result of work carried out in the recent term holidays the kitchen of the Southland Technical College is now propably one of the best of its kind in New Zealand. The bottom half of the walls of the room are now lined with white tiles and the remainder of the kitchen has been painted in accordance with a bright and tasteful colour scheme. New courts for basketbail, and which will be used for tennis in the summer, were. laid down during the holidays and the college now has three basketball courts and four tennis courts.
