SOUTHLAND LAMB PRAISED

Opinion Of London Judges EXPORT CLASS AT SUMMER SHOW High praise is given by the London judges for the entries in the special class at the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s summer show for 12 fat lambs suitable for export to be shipped to London for judging at Smithfield. The class was described by the judges, a copy of whose report was received yesterday by the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, as providing a very fine run of lambs. The lambs were said to be perhaps a little heavier than was desirable for the London trade, but were outstanding in breeding and quality. From a purely commercial point of view, the margin of value was narrow, but the high standard set by the first few pens stood out quite clearly when the carcasses were grouped. Apart from the fact that some of the lambs had their legs tom in dressing, the judges’ report added, the general appearance was excellent.

The first six placings were as follows: Southland Frozen Meat Company Ltd. (Makarewa) 1, G. Stevenson (Dacre) 2, James Lindsay (South Hillend) 3, James Grant (Bayswater) 4, M. Rabbitt (Kauana) 5, and Southland Frozen Meat Company 6. The judges’ comments on the first six pens are as follows: Southland Frozen Meat Company’s entry.—Magnificently bred lambs, full of meat but not too fat; short legs, good backs and thick shoulders, constituting perfect butchers’ meat and, in our opinion, the most suitable for the London trade.

G. Stevenson (Dacre). —Beautiful little lambs, full of meat and not too fat; of excellent make and shape. James Lindsay (South Hillend). —A very fine pen, except for two that were a shade unfinished on the legs; otherwise good butchers’ meat. James Grant (Bayswater).—Splendid lambs of excellent make and shape; of good quality, but a shade on the heavy side.

M. Rabbitt (Kauana). — A. very nice run of lambs, but one or two were a shade unfinished on the legs and some were rather heavy. Southland Frozen Meat Company.— Very nice lambs, but one or two inclined to fall away on legs.
