CLAIM FOR DAMAGES AGAINST UNION

WAITRESS ALLEGES UNFAIR BALLOT (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 25. A claim for £2O damages was brought by a waitress, Mrs Ivy Ellen Clarke, against the Wellington Hotel, Club and Restaurant Workers’ Union in the Magistrate’s Court today. The case arose from a meeting held on March 23 last to choose the union s delegate to the Easter conferences of the Federation of Labour and the New Zealand Labour Party. Mrs Clarke alleged that because she had differed from the executive on policy questions and had shown she was a woman of independent spirit and character and not a yes-man her name was wrongfully prevented from going to the ballot. Decision was reserved.
