ILLICIT STILL FOUND
Police Raid In Bush At Fairfax TWO MEN ARRESTED AND REMANDED Early yesterday morning a raid was made by police and Customs officials in the bush at Fairfax and an illicit still for manufacturing liquor was seized. In a tent nearby two men, were found sleeping. Both were arrested.
Later in the day Alexander Mcßae, of Invercargill and Harris Leslie Barnes, of Fairfax, both single, were charged in the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., with being unlawfully engaged in the manufacture of spirits. Mr S. M. Macalister, who represented the Collector of Customs (Mr K. H. Smyth) asked for a remand till May 31. The remand was granted. i Mr Macalister: In fairness to the defendants it is necessary to raise the question of bail. The Magistrate: I presume you will want pretty substantial bail? Mr Macalister: In view of the penalty for such an offence, a £5OO fine or six months’ imprisonment, yes. Bail was allowed each defendant at £250 each in his own recognizance and two sureties each of £250.
