STATE MARKETING OF LEMONS

STABILIZED PRICE FOR GROWERS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 24. As a result of discussions between the Government and the New Zealand Citrus Council as representatives of the growers the Government has now taken the responsibility of marketing all lemons and has assured growers of a stabilized price.

The Director of the Internal Marketing Division (Mr F. R. Picot) announced today that by the means adopted it should be possible to avoid alternate periods of over-supply with consequent low returns to producers and the corresponding harm done by the reverse position of very short supplies and high prices. Another reason for Government supervision was recognition of the need for standardizing curing methods so that only good quality fruit should reach the public and this should have the very desirable effect of stimulating a permanent demand for New Zealand lemons. Mr Picot also issues an assurance that with a close watch on supplies and maximum prices such difficulties as those experienced during the last few weeks will be immediately overcome. Referring to the influenza outbreak, he said that no supply could have met the sudden demand, which could not be foreseen.
