CLOSE COUNTING IN BY-ELECTION
LABOUR DEFEAT INDICATED . IN QUEENSLAND BRISBANE, May 22. The counting was close in the Federal by-election in the Griffith electorate made necessary by the death of Mr F. M. Baker (Labour). The results are:— W. P. Conelaw (Labour) 21,737 P. McCowan (United Australia Party) 16,418 E. H. Graham (Protestant Labour) 14,738 The final result will depend on the distribution of Mr Graham’s preference, most of which is expected to go to Mr McCowan, giving him victory.
