FLAGMAN NOT DISGRACED

Survoy’s Chance At Ellerslie WARDRESS A USEFUL STAYER

R. Beale rode Fireguard at Washdyke on Saturday and will also be riding at the Dunedin meeting. Named The yearling sister to _ Dark Flight has been named Gold Flight. Well Related The Paper Money gelding Treasurer is a half-brother to Cottingham, Rebel Star and Palmyra. Not Produced Lazybones was not produced at Washdyke because of the firm state of the going. There was little grass on the track, and for a winter meeting it has rarely been firmer. Birchwood Hunt The Birchwood Hunt will hold a meet at Drummond this afternoon when it is expected that there will be a big number of followers. Dunedin Meeting The weights for the Dunedin winter meeting will be announced on Friday and acceptances will close on May 30. Lochcorrib Lochcorrib, who has been qualifying with the Birchwood hounds this season, is a sister to Shillelagh Wood and half-sister to Bally Brit. Corban’s Fall When Corban fell in the Pareora Steeplechase at Washdyke his rider, H. Stuck, appeared to be seriously injured. He received a severe shaking but was not otherwise hurt. Remained at Washdyke J. Thistleton remained at Washdyke with Gold Wren and Pandine after last week’s meeting. He will go on to Wingatui tomorrow where he will remain until the Dunedin winter meeting. Not Disgraced When Flagman finished second to Nightcalm in the open sprint the second day at Wingatui it was his first appearance in open company. In being beaten by a length he was not disgraced in a fast-run race. Disband Sold

Disband has been sold by Mr J. P. Herlihy to Mr D. U. Crosbie, of Southland, and raced in the interests ox his new owner at Washdyke on Saturday. A Useful Stayer

Wardress is a better stayer than most in her class and the manner in which she won her two races, over a mile and a distance at Washdyke, created a good impression. The Lord Warden mare is trained by her owner, Mr R. D. Western at Riccarton and she looks certain to better her present record. Her dam Clink was got by Clarenceus from ■Wink, by Winkie from Judith, by Martian. Merry Simon

A hurdling career is intended for the three-year-old Merry Simon later on. The Gascony gelding has performed creditably in the little racing he has done on the flat and he gives the impression that he will develop into a stayer of some ability. He was purchased by his present owner, P. J. Boyle with the idea of racing him over hurdles later on. In the schooling he has had he has shown great promise but in the meantime his efforts will be confined to flat racing. Out of Action

Jewish Lad, which finished a poor third in the Longbeach Hurdles at the Ashburton meeting, ricked his back at the first hurdle, and has had to be turned out. This was unfortunate for D. Cotton, as the Rabbi gelding had plenty of pace, and was racing very consistently, though it looked as though a mile and a half was his best distance over hurdles. This season he had had thirteen starts for two wins, one second, and four thirds,'for £3BO in prize-money. Great Northern Prospect Survoy was only produced once at Washdyke last week when he won the hurdle race the first day in easy fashion, at the same time establishing a race record. The Surveyor gelding is to be taken north by E. J. Ellis next week when his mission will be the Great Northerfl Steeplechase. Survey’s class cannot be doubted and in a race such as the Northern Steeplechase he has an undeniable chance. He is a genuine stayer and his ability on the flat was shown at Riverton when he won the Southern Champion Hack Handicap at Easter. Twelve months ago Survoy won the steeplechase event at the Otautau meeting and was then sent out a firm favourite for the Great Western Steeplechase. In the latter race he was going very easily when he fell, and it was contended after, that had there been more pace on he would not have made this mistake. Survoy will be ridden at Ellerslie by A. E. Ellis.

Wild Chase Retired Wild Chase is to be retired from racing. The Paper Money-Wild Hind horse has won £6760 in stakes, £3210 of this amount being earned as a three-; year-old, when his victories included the Derby, Canterbury Cup, Dunedin Cup, Hazlett Cup and Awapuni Gold Cup. Next season Wild Chase finished second in the New Zealand Cup, and it is probable that this took heavy toll of him, as he did not reach the heights his earlier deeds led his admirers to expect. He did not win a race that season, and this year his successes were confined to a minor handicap at Riccarton and the Manawatu Cup, though he was runner-up to Queen of Song in the Dimedin Cup. His record would probably have been more impressive this year had the tracks been a bit softer, as he was not at home on very hard going. Wild Chase is to do stud duty at Stonyhurst, where he was bred.

Two Losing Fees Before the Southburn Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday, E. Baker complained that he had been engaged to ride Astral Flash in the Southburn Hack Handicap, states The Timaru Herald. Mr W. E. Hazlett, part owner and trainer of Astral Flash, said that he engaged Baker to ride providing he would not have to put up more than lib over-weight. Baker rode this horse the first day carrying 3ilb overweight. Baker was weighed out by the clerk of the scales. When Mr W. E. Hazlett found that the boy would be carrying 41b overweight he then engaged L. Hare to ride his horse. The stipendiary steward called Mr W. E< Hazlett and E. Baker before the chairman of the judicial committee, and they decided that Baker should be paid a losing fee.
