FERRY POST IN FORM

Winter Meeting To

Conclude

KING POTTS MAY MAKE AMENDS

PECUNIA HAS EXCELLENT CREDENTIALS

(From Our Special Reporter) DUNEDIN, May 12.

Although the weather was overcast and several showers of rain fell in Dunedin today it has not greatly affected the track at Forbury Park and conditions for the second day of the winter meeting of the club tomorrow should be much the same as yesterday. A strong breeze has dried the track and there is every prospect of it being fine for tomorrow.

Yesterday’s winner, Lightning Lady, is missing from the chief event, the James Memorial Handicap and Ginger Jack is a likely newcomer. The first day’s running may not prove a reliable guide as tomorrow’s race may be run much differently. The Donald bracket, Ferry Post and Marlene, is again likely to be most in demand.

For his sprint win Ferry Post has not been penalized over two miles and there is an idea that he may be started here ahead of Marlene. Ferry Post appears to act much more kindly for his trainer, and there is every reason that he should be favourite.

Marsceres was unlucky in the running yesterday and if the track is heavy it will suit him while he can also act on a firm surface. Ginger Jack was a useful fourth from the back mark in the sprint race and he, too, is capable of running a. good two miles. Nell Grattan’s consistency will earn her respect while of the others Horsepower is the most likely. STRONG SPRINT FIELD It is likely that there will be several deletions from the Farewell Handicap field but if Marlene is reserved for this race she will have a big following. Lightning Lady can both sprint and stay and as this is her only engagement she will be one of the favourites. Windsor Lass was well beaten yesterday but if she is not made so much use of she may take a hand in the finish. Red Pigeon would only require to race up to her first day’s form to have a chance and the same applies to Horsepower. If this race is Van Derby’s mission he will only have to behave correctly to be hard to beat , but is too unreliable. Hatrack and Hamel Bey will be among the favourites for the Tahuna Handicap as there was a lot of merit in their first day’s placings. •Of the others Chudleigh and Jimmy Drusus are the most likely. Rowi is the form horse for the Southland Handicap and he may receive most opposition from Accountant, who was unlucky yesterday, and Axspear while Marfax is not without a chance. Pecunia won so well yesterday that he is entitled to be a firm favourite for the Pacific Handicap in which he is again nicely placed. He has now won in his last two starts. King Potts was unlucky yesterday and he is capable of making a race of it. Gold Bank would only require to hit his hopples correctly. Dan McGrew may be improved by his race and he will still have his supporters. LIKELY IMPROVERS Coquette and Accountant are the most likely of those off the front line of the Railway Handicap but they will be opposed to two improvers in Regal and Stamboul, both of whom raced well yesterday. Blue Logan and Peggotty stand out in the Peninsula Handicap but over this journey yesterday’s winner, Bittersweet is a hard mare to beat, and she is quite capable of winning again. Van Derby would only require to move off correctly in the Royal Handicap to be hard to beat from 108yds back but there is no guarantee that he will. Privateer and King Potts are capable of showing up in this company while Gold Bank and Gay Lady will both have a following. Horses in form are:— TAHUNA HANDICAP: Hatrack, Hamel Bey, Jimmy Drusus.
