COLOUR COCKTAILS FOR AUTUMN

The Right And Wrong Of Accessories

To match or not to match—that is the question where accessories are concerned. For colour, subtly built up harmonies and contrasts as exciting, as surprising as you can make—and take —them has never been more important than it is this autumn, 1939.

But this blending of heady colour cocktails to toast the new season should be warily approached. It is not to be tackled lightly, for the exotic new colours that an inspired fashion has given us to gladden our hearts through the “sere and yellow” months arer in their subtle admixture of tints and tones, tricky shades to handle. Those glamorous vintage tonings, for instance, are proud, aloof aristocrats among colours that refuse to. “mix” indiscriminately; put them with colours they do not take to, and they behave sourly, losing all their warmth and rich vitality. Nor are the new blues —shades that defy exact classification with their subtle tincture of grey or green or purple—any more tractable. They, too, need judicious, tactful handling. All of which makes that matter of choosing just the right accessories to wear with your new autumn suit or frock something of a poser. And stockings in particular present a problem now that the designers have let their . imaginations run riot, and given us a whole host of exciting new shades,, till this season undreamt of in the hosiery manufacturer’s philosophy! Enchanting, these new tones, but only effective when they discover the right colour complement in suit or frock. These exciting new wine tonings, for instance, will obviously team admirably with the grape purples, the deep plum reds, the clarets and roseberry shades on. which fashion has turned her spotlight for day time as well as evening wear. But if you want to achieve a contrast for your vintagetoned ensemble there is a lovely new pastel-toned stocking with an . iridescence of indefinable colour in its make-up that fills the bill with competence and chic. Or if you tend towards conservatism in the matter of stocking hues a neutral “horizon” beige you will find satisfying with plums and purples. And each of this, glamorous new trio allies delightfully with black, especially the wine-toned 1 which by all. means should be your choice for evening. ’ , TEAL BLUE AND CARBON But if the new teal blue or the equally new carbon and the laurel and grape greens has been your choice for your autumn outfit you may dally between these wine-coloured stockings—an admirable choice when your legs are sum and can afford the attention that this piquant contrasting of colours wul direct to them—or you may favour the rich, glowing copper that is the latest version of those old favourites, the sun tan tonings. There is a more vivid tan, too, among the new autumn colours for stockings, a clear, brilliant toning that is perfect with teal blue, and hardly less effective with the new green. But whether you elect to have your accessories matching your ensemble, or whether you choose to have them providing a piquant colour contrast, it is important that they should be in complete harmony among themselves — shoes and stockings, gloves and handbag.
