MERCURY AND FORD EXHIBITS The high-light of the motor exhibits at this year’s Winter Show is the new Mercury eight cyclinder car on display on Macaulay Motors’ stand. This new car—a new product produced by the Ford Motor Company—presents a new name and a new value to the motoring public of • New Zealand. For years people have been writing, to the Ford Motor Company asking why a larger car was not produced. They appreciated the Ford values but wanted a more spacious car. Many could not stretch their budget to cover the Lincoln products, and so the new Mercury is the result. Built on a 116 inch wheelbase, with 127 inch spring-base the car is exceptionally wide with truly surprising seat width. Beautiful stream-lined contours, massive fenders, and low set radiator grille, are characteristics which make this new car stand out amongst all others. All steel body, shatterless glass in all windows, and big powerful hydraulic brakes are safety features which will appeal to everyone. Beautiful hand-buffed English leather upholstery forms the basis for a modern and attractive interior finish. The Mercury car is powered with a 95 h.p. eight cylinder engine which sets an entirely new standard of performance—large 6.50 x 16 tyres coupled with hydraulic shock-absorbers and flexible springing give unprecedented driving comfort. The town sedan on display is painted in light grey synthetic enamel which gives a lasting and lustrous finish. The English “Motor” in describing the New Mercury says “No car we have tried this year has better performance figures than those obtained with the new Mercury.” In addition to the Mercury, Macaulay (Motors are this year exhibiting the ever-popular Ford V.B models for 1939 —two cars are on display—a De Luxe Coupe and a Standard 5-seatcr Saloon. Both cars are now fitted with hydraulic brakes and this year the body lines have been refined into the smoothest and most authentic streamlines ever offered. Ford V.B sales will lead again in 1939 just as in every past year. Both Ford and Mercury cars are assembled in New Zealand at the huge Ford Factory at Lower Hutt, Wellington. New Zealand labour and materials are used as far as possible. The New Zealand broadcloth used in the upholstery is typical of the first-class material obtainable in this country.
