CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

BUSHCRAFT CARNIVAL TO BE HELD The first meeting of the new directorate of the Invercargill Caledonian Society was held on Wednesday evening, Mr John MacGregor presiding over Messrs R. D. Donaldson, F. Sharp, A. St. C. Macgregor, R. G. Diack, V. S. Vial, W. Young, J. D. McKenzie, A. E. Cocker, Ellis Sutton, F. Waldron, P. Scott, W. Robison, F. Sutherland, A. McDonald and J. Mackintosh. Advice was received from E. C. Atkins and Co., United States, that another gift of two saws would be given to the society for the 1940 games. A gift of £5 5/- was passed to the Caledonian Pipe Band for services given at various functions during the year.

Messrs M. C. Wilson and R. D. Donaldson were elected secretary and treasurer respectively for the ensuing year.

The sub-committee in charge of the bushcraft carnival which is to be held in the Civic Theatre on May 29, reported on details of the carnival programme which includes the championships of Southland and Otago in the 15-inch underhand chop and 18-inch doublehanded sawing. A good programme of 23 bushcraft events has been drawn up. It is expected that competitors will be drawn from Otago and Southland and the best axemen in these provinces will most likely compete.

The supporting programme consists of Highland dancing and the society has secured the services of Miss Norma Marshall, of Dunedin, New Zealand champion dancer. The pupils of Madame May Thom will be seen in foursome and eightsome reels.
