HEDGEHOPE

WELCOME TO HOME MISSIONARY A representative gathering attended a church service and social in the Hedgehope Presbyterian Church to welcome Mr and Mrs C. V. Stewart and their family to the district. Mr Stewart, formerly of North Auckland, has recently been appointed to the Hedge-hope-Mabel Bush charge as the successor to the Rev. G. H. Crockett, who has been transfered to Fenwicktown, Marlborough. The service was conducted by the Rev. C. J. Mill, Browns. After the service speeches of welcome were made by various officers of the local and neighbouring churches. , Mr J. Campbell, Mabel Bush, Mr J. Graham, Glencoe, Mr R. Dix, Springhills, Mr H. Anderson, Miss Sarah Evans, of Hedgehope and Miss Dix, Springhills extended a welcome to Mr and Mrs Stewart and their family. In his reply Mr Stewart thanked the speakers for their kindly welcome and expressed the hope that his stay in the district would be both a useful and happy one.

TENNIS CLUB DANCE A final dance for the season was held by the tennis club in the Hedgehope hall. Although the attendance was not as big as usual the dance was most successful. Mr D. Buchanan sang a bracket of songs. Music was played by Mr A. Yeo’s Piano-Accordion Band. Prizes were awarded as follows: Novelty dances: Miss M. McLeod and Mr R. McLeod, statue dance; Miss D. Lawrence and Mr J. Kerr, Monte Carlo; Miss O. Sanderson and Mr J. Graham, spot waltz. Messrs R. Ker, M. Jukes and C. Beck were masters of ceremonies. ANZAC SERVICES A service, conducted by Mr C. V. Stewart, was held in the school on Anzac Day. An Anzac service, held under the auspices of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was very well attended. Mr E. Hargest, Kennington, gave an address. Mrs Ker sang a solo “Some Day We’ll Understand.” Proceeds from sale of poppies amounted to £l3 15/-. INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC The majority of families in the district suffered attacks of influenza. Last week the school attendance was reduced by more than one third.
