BIG ENTRIES AT BIRD SHOW

SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE EXHIBITS OF OUTSTANDING QUALITY Big entries were received for nearly all the classes of a show for young birds held by the Invercargill Canary and Cage Bird Specialists’ Club on Saturday in the United Friendly Societies Hall. The entries totalled 140 and included in this number were some birds of outstanding quality. There was a good attendance of the public, both in the afternoon and evening, and the exhibits attracted much favourable comThe show, which was the first of its kind in Invercargill, was for young birds only, most of the exhibits being about four months old. The competition was keen in all sections, including those for Yorkshire and Norwich canaries, mules, budgerigars and finches. Mr W. Hill judged the canaries, mules and British finches and he was very pleased with the condition of the birds. There were some splendid representatives of the various breeds and the judge’s task was by no means an easy one.. The winners of the competition for the best bird in the canary section were Misses L. Taylor and W. Taylor whose Yorkshire hen was given nrst place. This was an outstanding bird with many fine qualities. The judge of the budgerigars and foreign finches was Mr W. Taylor, who said that generally speaking the budgerigars were of a high standard, iney were a great improvement on the same class shown in Invercargill several years ago. Many of the birds shown were rather young and were just going into a moult. However, several ot these birds would probably give a good account of themselves at later shows. The winners were typical birds and most of them were in splendid feather. Mr C. King’s . cinnamon-winged cock bird, which won the cup for the best budgerigar in the show, was a splendid budgerigar of great length and good skull. Mr G. Winter’s yellow-winged green hen, which was just beaten by Mr King’s exhibit, possessed beautiful feather and good substance. The results are:— YORKSHIRE CANARIES Clear yellow cock.—L. and W.
