J. B. QUEALE WINS ALL COMERS’ EVENT

With excellent entries in all events the annual trials of the Wendon and Otama Valley Dog Trials Club held on Mr R. H. Christie’s property, Wendon. on Thursday and yesterday were an outstanding success. Many prominent breeders were present and there was keen competition in all events. The meeting was controlled by Mr R. H. Christie (president), and Messrs H. White and J. D. Smith carried out the secretarial duties. Fair progress was made on the first day when two events were finished and the trials were finished in good time last evening. The two main events went to J. B. Queale (Lochiel) and J. Waddell (Waikaka Valley). Mr Queale won the all-comers’ event last year and in 1937 and again yesterday. He also secured a second in yesterday’s event. Mr Waddell won the open huntaway yesterday. The maiden heading event for boys and girls under 16 years was won by D. Watson. A. Morris (W.aikaka) was successful in the maiden heading event, open; and the maiden huntaway was won by W. McMeeken (Otama). The trials were run under the Southland Association’s rules and competition was keen throughout. There was a splendid attendance at the trials on both days and the events were followed with keen interest. Results are as follows: —

MAIDEN HEADING EVENT (for boys or girls under 16 years).—-Head-ing, bringing back and holding in ring. First prize 10/-, second 5/-, third 3/-. fourth 2/-. Points: Head 20, pull 25, ring 5, command 10, total 60. D. Watson’s Grace 12, 17, 2, 4—35 1 G. Baird’s Ben 10, 13, 2, 5—30 2 J. Hansen’s Tweed 3, 19, 0, 2—24 3 B. Christie’s Jack (no points) 4 Grace was sent out on the right and made a wide cast. She came in and stopped twice and pulled the sheep off the course. She held them at the second attempt. Time, 6Jmin. Ben was cast to the left and he came in and did not take direction. He crossed his head and chased the sheep off the course, let them through the ring and then held them steady in the ring. Time, 4|min. 1 Tweed, who went out on the left, was called back and recast in front of his owner. He made a chasing head and effected a see-saw pull. He let the sheep through the ring and failed to collect.

MAIDEN HEADING EVENT (open).—Head, bring back and hold in ring. Distance about 400 yards. Time, 8 minutes. First prize £2 10/-, and rose bowl to be won twice (not necessarily in succession), second £1 10/-, third 15/-, fourth 5/-. Points: Head 20, pull 25, ring 5, command 10, total 60. A. He made a fairly good lift, pulled nicely, but let the sheep slightly off the course before entering the ring to hold well. Pat was sent out on the right and made a good head, but moved the sheep. He pulled the sheep very carefully, let them drift at the foot of the hill, and came in sight out of position. He brought the sheep quietly into the ring and held. Jack was cast nicely to the right and he ran out freely and headed well. He lifted the sheep well, but pulled too fast and in a bad line. He let the sheep through the ring once and then held. Lark was cast to the right. The sheep moved, but he headed and lifted rashly, swinging on the face and letting the sheep off the course. He held in the ring at the first attempt.

AT.T. COMERS’ OPEN HEADING EVENT. —Heading, bringing back, hold in ring and drive to yard and yard. Time, 10 minutes. First prize £4, and cup to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals, second £2, third £l, fourth 10/-. She pulled very nicely, held at first attempt, did good ring work, made a good drive, let sheep slightly past yard, driving slightly and yarded. Roy also went out on the right, headed well, lifted quietly and made a fair pull slightly off course, held in ring at first attempt, made a good drive, let sheep slightly past yards and then yarded. Kep went out on the left, made a fair head, was slow to lift, effected a fair pull, let sheep run a bit on flat, held in ring at first attempt, made a fair drive to yard, went round back of yard and yarded. Sandy cast to right, made a good run out and a fair head, pulled to left a bit rashly to enter the side of the ring. He held in the ring, was slack in the drive to the yard and let the sheep run round the yard before yarding.

MAIDEN HUNTAWAY.—Dog to huntaway and slew between three sets of poles. First prize £2 10/-, and cup to be won twice (not necessarily in succession), second £1 10/-, third 15/-, fourth 5/-. He took them through the second poles and hunted fairly well to below the third. He then took the wrong slew, but completed in good style. After swinging about at the start, Joe took the sheep through the first poles. He took them through the second poles with some difficulty and he swung a fair amount in negotiating the third poles. Lou began nicely, took one or two wrong slews through the first poles, went on through the second poles irt good style, but took the wrong slew on the face, splitting the sheep. He finished on through the third poles in good style. After missing the first poles at the first attempt, Moss brought them back and put the sheep through. He swung about a lot through the second poles and put the sheep through the third poles to complete in good style.

He allowed them to get off the course, but recovered fairly well. Moss made a bad start, but recovered and hunted the sheep thiough the first poles. He went on well through the second poles although he was too far off the sheep and barked at his master. He completed the third poles in good line.
