CAR HURTLES INTO RIVER

YOUNG MAN IN CRITICAL CONDITION

BLENHEIM, April 1.

A sensational motor smash in the middle of Renwick road this morning resulted in serious neck injuries—dislocation nr fracture—to a young man, Eric S. Newburgh of Sumner, Christchurch, a passenger in a motor-car which collided head-on with a loaded three-ton motor-lorry.

The scene of the accident is Farhall diversion where there is a small low level bridge between two high embankments. Newburgh is an employee of the Southern Construction Company which is engaged in levelling the new defence aerodrome at Woodbourne. The car was driven by another employee, Charles Gordon Gladstone Prior. The car was proceeding from town to the aerodrome and topped the embanknient to find the lorry, driven by C. Fraei, approaching on the bridge. -After crashing into the front of the lorry the car hurdled the bonnet and crashed through the side of the bridge into the creek-bed 10 feet below with the left side completely shorn open. Newburgh is in a critical condition. Prior escaped with abrasions.
