ENGINEERS INSPECT HOMER TUNNEL

PARTY FROM SOUTHLAND AND OTAGO An inspection of the Homer tunnel work was carried out by a party of engineers from 'Otago and Southland during the week-end. The visit was organized by the Southland branch of the New Zealand ..Institute of Engineers,, the Otago branch being invited to send representatives. The party totalled 35 engineers, representing the civil, electrical and mechanical branches Of the profession. By the courtesy of the Public Works Department and the contractor, Mr A. Downer, full facilities were granted to the party for a complete inspection of / the work. A visit was also made to the road construction works on the lower Hollyford road. ; f On Saturday night a meeting was held in the Public Works Department recreation hall at Cascade Creek. Mr G. R. Milward, chairman of the Southland branch of the institute, presided. An interesting paper and talk on the tunnel work was given by Mr D. U. White, Public Works engineer in charge at the work. At Te Anau on the way to the Hollyford Valley the party was entertained at morning tea by the Mayor and Mayoress of Invercargill (Mr and Mrs J. R. Hanan). Good weather made the visit, which was of a highly educational value to the party, an enjoyable one.
