NAZI STOCKING IN POLAND

GERMAN NATIONALS WEAR EMBLEM BRITISH CABINET MEETS REPORTS OF ACTIVITY NEAR FRONTIER (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received March 31, 10.15 p.m.) LONDON, March 31. The Warsaw correspondent of The Times says the so-called Nazi “white stockings” have appeared in Poland. The wearers are German nationals. The Times says the Cabinet met specially twice yesterday to consider reports from the Continent about Polish-German relations. Reports were confirmed of German suggestions to Poland for a Danzig settlement, construction of a motor road across the corridor and the clarification of Poland’s attitude towards the Soviet.

Reports were also received of German military activity at points near the Polish frontier. The Berlin correspondent of The Times says that the Government regards it as essential that Poland should now declare where she stands. Consequently the conversations between the German Foreign Minister, Herr Joachim von Ribbentrop, and the Polish Ambassador in Berlin, coinciding with those between the German Ambassador to Poland and Colonel Josef Beck, the Polish Foreign Minister, in Warsaw may be assumed to be most important. Poland, so far as can be gathered, has a chance of collaborating with the Reich on the basis of the sacrifice of Danzig —not necessarily immediately, however —and the concession of additional facilities to the Reich across the Polish corridor. The Reich is prepared to guaran-

tee Poland’s outlet to the sea. There are also suggestions of a frontier guarantee and of an extension of the treaty of friendship for a further five years. Poland may regard these terms as prelerable to a conflict in which she stands to lose even more than has been indicated. Dr Frick stated that the GermanPolish Minorities Agreement of 1937 had not satisfied all wishes, states a message from Berlin. There is a series of burning questions for solution. The treatment of a German minority in another State would not fail to affect the treatment of the respective minority living in Germany. This was in reference to the favoured position of the Polish minority throughout Germany.

The internal defence loan contributions exceed £1,500,000, states a message from Warsaw. The Press unanimously emphasizes the importance of Colonel Beck’s visit to London. The President (M. Ignace Moscicki) received leading members' of the Opposition and also the Peasant Party leaders.
