Shoddy

Shoddy is the name given to a kind of cloth made up mostly of woollen or worsted rags, torn up and re-fabricated by powerful machinery. It was first made at Batley in Yorkshire about 1813, and in recent times the making of it has become a very important industry which employs many thousands of people at Batley, and the neighbouring town of Dewsbury.
