QUALITY OF FARM BUTTER

COMPLAINTS DISCUSSED.BY FARMERS’ UNION Complaints about the quality of butter made on farms and sold on the market were discussed at yesterday’s meeting .of the Southland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union. The secretary (Mr A. L. Adamson) said that from two quarters reports were that the general quality of farm butter was good, but that there was a weakness in the marketing in that after delivery at a country store it might lie unsold, and without the advantages of refrigeration for a week or a fortnight, before being dumped on to the wholesale market. At that stage the butfer, while not being bad, was stale. There were cases . where farm better was of definitely poor quality. It was stated that a grocer on his delivery (round might pick up butter from farms and carry it round all day. At the end of the day it would not look like a pound of butter at all. The chairman (Mr E. Cameron) suggested that the matter could be brought to "the notice of the retailers. Other members said that if a date were affixed to the wrapper it would improve matters. It was the storekeeper’s job to get rid of the butter. / “Yes, but the farmer gets the blame for its condition,” said the chairman. No action was taken in the matter.
