SERIOUS LOSSES OF STOCK

EXPERIENCE IN TRANSVAAL It is reported that a further serious outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has occurred on the north-eastern border of the Transvaal. As there was in this case no doubt as to the nature of the disease the affected and contact cattle, to the number of six or seven thousand, were immediately destroyed. As most of the cattle belonged to natives, and were of a poor type, the cost in the way of compensation Will not be so heavy as in previous outbreaks and should not exceed £20,000/ All outbreaks in the Union have so far been in districts adjoining Portuguese African territory, and as the Portuguese authorities are not so energetic or thorough in measures for foot-and-mouth control, it is feared that the disease may become endemic in that area.
