POULTRY BOARD CHAIRMAN

Section Of Industry Desires Minister MOVED BY EXAMPLE OF WHEAT GROWERS r (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 30. Moved by the example of the Wheat Board, a section of the poultry industry desires that a Cabinet Minister should be appointed chairman of the New Zealand Poultry Board. A Waikato remit carried at the annual conference of the New Zealand Poultry Producers’ Federation in Wellington today asked the Government to consider making such an appointment. Moving the adoption of the remit, Mr G. D. Hunter (Waikato) said that it was not a vote of no-confidence in the present chairman of the board. The chairman of the board (Mr A. E. Knowles): I hope not. Mr Hunter said the remit was prompted by a desire to emulate the wheat growers, who had succeeded in getting a price for their produce which was more than double the open market price. “I can see quite a number of interesting possibilities in this,” Mr Hunter continued. “We might get a higher price for our B grade eggs than we get for the A grade. There is a great need at present for us to have a Cabinet Minister in such a position that he must listen to our grievances, so we can make his life a burden to him. The industry will then Ipecome one, of the major industries of the country.” Seconding the remit, Mr J. W. McGlinchy (Christchurch), said the adoption of the proposal would give the industry some social standing and make the Government realize that it was, of some importance. At the same time, he was not very optimistic about getting the. proposal adopted. Another delegate said that Mr Hunter would only have to make the life of a Cabinet Minister a burden once and a deputy-chairman would be appointed. The president of the federation, the Rev. W. F. Stent (Wairarapa), said that if the remit were not passed it might mean a vote of no-confidence in the Minister.

> The remit was declared carried on the voices.
