WAIANIWA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The members of the Waianiwa Women’s Institute celebrated their fifth birthday in the hall. A big number of visitors was present from other institutes, Spar Bush, Kennington, Tisbury, Clifton and Hawthorndale. The Southern Southland Federation was represented and also the Wrights Bush branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs Fraser, retiring president, assisted by the new president, Mrs Suggatte, presided. Solos were given by Miss Dalrymple, Miss Baird and Mrs Smithies. Two sketches were given by members.

The birthday cake was made and decorated by the senior vice-president, Mrs Bruland, and cut by Mrs Suggatte* A representative from each visiting institute also cut a slice. Prizes for the year’s competitions resulted as follows: Mrs Robertson 1, Mrs G. Lindsay 2, Mrs R. McNeill 3. Post office money boxes were presented to two institute babies, Athol Bennie and Lindsay Wilson.
