BASKETBALL

OPENING DAY ON APRIL 15 KNOCK-OUT TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD A decision, to hold the opening day on April 15, when a knock-out tournament would be held, was reached at the annual meeting of .the Southland Basketball Union last night. It was decided that entries for the tournament should close on April 6 and that entries for the weekly competitions should be forwarded by April 15. Mr A. Kinross was chairman ,and he extended a welcome to those present.

The annual report (previously published) was adopted. Speaking to the annual report, Mr Kinross thanked the country referees for their help on Country Day. Last year, he said, the two-life system had been instituted in the evening tournaments and was greatly appreciated by players and spectators alike. In future the draws for fine and wet days would probably be the same, to avoid confusion. During the year Miss E. B. Pay, Mrs B. Challis and Mr A. Cook had left Invercargill and their services would be greatly missed. Mr Kinross assured the players that, although many were diffident about the new rules, they would find with practice that there was really very little difference from the former rules. Because of the small number of first grade teams, it was decided that the system of handicapping the highest second grade teams playing first grade should be continued.

Miss A. Hallamore referred to the Oreti Surf Life-Saving Club’s carnival at Oreti beach and said that 12 teams entered the basketball competition. The new rule books were now on hand and could be obtained from the secretary. The scarcity of referees and timekeepers was commented on by Miss Hallamore, who urged that any persons desirous of helping should inform members of the executive of their wish to assist. The election of officers resulted:— Patrons, Mrs R. S. Mclnnes and Mr J. A. Doig; president, Miss L. Hallamore; vice-presidents, Mrs T. Noble, Mr A. Kinross and Miss McKenzie; secretary, Miss M. Watson; treasurer, Miss M. Shand; executive, Misses M. Godward and Cooper and Mr Haberfield (nonplaying members), Misses E. Neame, B. Ingram (playing members); honorary auditor, Mr C. E. Borne; representative of Secondary Schools’ Association, Miss V. Smith; representative of Referees’ Association, Miss D. Hutton. After the annual meeting a meeting of the executive was held, Miss Hallamore presiding. The following members were present: Mrs Noble, Misses Cooper, Godward, McKenzie, Hutton, Ingram, Watson and Smith and Messrs Kinross and Haberfield. A letter was received from the Clifton Club giving notice of its tentative affiliation.

Transfers were granted to M. Gordon and E. Drake from Collegiate and Bluff. The following committees were appointed:—Finance committee, Mrs Noble and Miss Shand; social committee, Mrs Noble and Miss Cooper, match committee, Misses Watson, Godward, Ingram, Neame and Mr Kinross; grounds committee, Misses McKenzie and Hutton; postponement committee, Misses Watson and Hallamore.
