REDUCED CHARGES FOR ELECTRICITY

MR SEMPLE ADVISES PROGRESS LEAGUE Confirmation of the advice of a reduction in electricity charges in Southland has been received by the secretary of the Southland Progress League (Mr J. S. Dick) from the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple). He had delayed replying to the letter from the league until he was in a position to give a definite assurance on the reduction of electricity charges in Southland, wrote Mr Semple. “I would remind you,” he added, “that with the advent of Government control of electricity in Southland consumers there have been relieved of the imposition of any further land rates; prices for electricity have been reduced from 7d to 6Jd for the high rate units, and now a substantial reduction has been granted which will bring the charges for electricity in your district into closer line with those ruling in other parts of New Zealand. It rests with the consumers themselves now whether any further reductions, if any, can be granted.” The reductions had been announced and they will come into operation almost immediately, stated Mr Semple.
