FISHING RESUMED AT ISLAND

Rumour Of Subsidy Denied

STATEMENT BY UNION SECRETARY (Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, March 22. There were no further developments to report in the Stewart Island fishing dispute as the men concerned had resumed operations today, said. Mr W. Clark, secretary of the Dunedin branch of the Federated Seamen’s Union, who has just returned from the south. The terms of the settlement had been placed before the men and they had agreed to begin fishing immediately. There were, however, a few minor matters of detail still to be fixed. Asked whether it was true that the Government was paying a subsidy of 3/- per 1001 b to bring the price -paid to the men up to 29/2 per 1001 b, Mr Clark had no hesitation in saying that he denied the rumour.

A report from Bluff states that fishing was resumed at Stewart Island on morning after a hold-up which lasted more than seven months, according to official advice received yesterday. The resumption of fishing was favoured by excellent weather. Quantities of fresh fish were brought to Bluff yesterday by island vessels, and this should reach the markets almost immediately.
