SALALON IS RACING SOLIDLY BANKSTOCK A PROMISING NOVICE Yon Yan is overdue to win a novice race and he will be a firm favourite at the Birchwood meeting. Starter Appointed. Mr T. Marshall, of Invercargill, has been appointed starter for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting. In Favour Dan McGrew, who has improved greatly in stamina with recent racing, will be in favour for the two-mile pacers’ race on the final day of the Riverton meeting. A Change? It was stated at Wyndham on Saturday that the club was likely to change to the win-and-place system of betting for its next annual meeting. Although there was a slight decrease in the attendance, the fields were excellent ones and a totalizator increase was anticipated. For Australia After the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting, Golden Eagle, Bittersweet and Rongomai will be shipped to Australia, where they will do their future racing. Disappointed Flash Guy raced disappointingly at Wyndham after his good win at Gore last month. He began much more smartly than usual and was always handily placed, but stopped over the last halfmile. It was a poor effort in comparison with his previous start.

Promising Novice Bankstock is a novice of whom more, will be heard. The three-year-old was having his first start at Wyndham, and while he was well back in the early running in a big novice field, he paced truly all the way and was closer at the finish than at any other stage. He is a member of the same family as Gold Bank, Debenture and Sydney Grand.

Well Related When Wrack stood for two seasons at the stud in Southland he was mated with a big list of mares each year, and Viscosa, the novice winner at Wyndham, is one of the oldest of his stock. Viscosa is out of Azaleas, a mare who left several winners, her * list including: Arabia (who was later sent to Australia), Azure, Picotee and Tritoma. Not True Form

Equerry’s Wyndham form was not up to expectations. With five furlongs to go he made a promising move into third place but he did not look like improving his position from then on and when the pressure was applied he dropped right out. Equerry usually stays well in his race and he is more capable than this form made him out to be. Salalon’s Solidness

No pacer in the better classes in Southland has raced more solidly this season than Salalon, who has improved greatly since joining up with D. Kerr’s team. During the holidays he was placed over two miles in 4min 29sec and in the Wyndham Cup from 24yds back he was a good second to Vinola in 4min 29 3-ssec. Salalon may never go as far in the handicaps as his half-relations Sure and Probationer, but he is capable of winning in better company when the classes are suitable.

Mazaire’s Sprint Time and again Canterbury horses have held too many guns for Southlanders over sprint distances and again at Wyndham, Mazaire completely outclassed the opposition. It would be difficult to imagine a more decisive win as the stylish Jack Potts pacer was not required to do his best to win by six lengths and equal the track record of 2min 44sec. Mazaire’s win was one of the easiest seen in Southland for some time.

Kenworthy Kenworthy, who has reached a 4min 28sec mark, and is getting close to New Zealand Trotting Cup class, may contest the Adams Memorial Cup. If he does not reach the Cup limit before the end of the season, Kenworthy will race at Addington in August in an attempt to make the grade.

Melbourne Derby The Melbourne Derby, which is divided into divisions for pacers and trotters, each with a stake of £250, was contested at Ascot on March 6, the pacing section being won by Radiant Robert, a colt by Robert Derby from Ellen Mary. Louis Desire, by Louis Direct— Marie Dillon, was second, and Black Jay, by One Step—Blink Bonnie, was third, and the New Zealand representative, Worthy Empress, fourth. The winner’s time was 2min 19Jsec. The trotting section was a triumph for progeny of Roy Redmond. Dot Redmond, from Dot Wilkes, won, with Betty Redmond second and Black Redmond fourth. The winner trotted 2min 32sec, the race record, 2min 27Jsec, standing to the credit of the 1933 winner, Carl. Roy Redmond sired last year’s winner, David Redmond, and another son, Dick Redmond, has won two races in Auckland.
