EMPLOYEES’ GIFT TO MAYOR

MR AND MRS HANAN HONOURED CITY COUNCIL STAFFS EXPRESS GOODWILL There was a full representation of the staffs of the various departments of the Invercargill City Council in the Council Chamber at 5 p.m. yesterday when a silver entree dish was presented to the Mayor (Mr J. R. Hanan) ana Mrs Hanan as a wedding gift from the council’s employees. The town clerk (Mr W. F. Sturman) made the presentation to Mrs Hanan and Mr A. C. Carman and Mr W. B. O’Toole also spoke. The Mayor and Mayoress replied. “The employees of the City Council felt that they could not allow such a happy occasion as the Mayor’s wedding to pass without expressing their goodwill,” said Mr Sturman. He emphasized that it was not only the heads of the various departments who were making the gift but the men throughout the corporation. The employees had expressed their desire to have the opportunity of expressing their goodwill to Mr and Mrs Hanan, said Mr Sturman. “Despite the short time the heads of departments have been associated with Mr Hanan we hold him in high esteem,” concluded Mr Sturman. He expressed pleasure at seeing Mrs Hanan present and conveyed good wishes to her. PROMISE FULFILLED “Before the elections we were promised a Mayoress by Mr Hanan and she is at this meeting today,” said Mr O’Toole. He thought Mrs Hanan would worthily uphold the traditions of her important position. He conveyed his congratulations. Mr A. C. Carman also spoke wishing the guests of honour good fortune and expressing the goodwill of his department to them. Mr Hanan expressed his thanks for the gift and said that he was deeply touched by it. “The staffs have forgotten that a young man is in the office of Mayor and have gone on giving loyalty, support and help to me, just as they have always done to Mayors in the past,” said Mr Hanan. Mrs Hanan was received enthusiastically when she rose to reply. She was quite overwhelmed by the beautiful gift, she said. It would always be one of their most treasured possessions and would serve to keep fresh in their memory the goodwill expressed by the staffs.

Musical honours were accorded Mr and Mrs Hanan.
