NEW SYSTEM INSTALLED IN INVERCARGILL

GOOD RESULTS OF FILTRATION ALREADY OBTAINED

Householders of Invercargill may now look forward to a steady improvement in the city water supply, as the Ci y Council’s purification plant at the water works has been installed and is partly in operation. The contract price of the filtration plant, installed by Candy Filters (N.Z.) Ltd. Auckland, was £14,103, and in addition to the contract price the council will spend £6OOO or £7OOO in alterations o mains and buildings, so that the total cost to the city 01 the water treatment plant will be about £ 20,000.

The plant which is the most modern of its kind in the southern hemisphere, consists of seven filters, four being installed at the pumping station at the power house, and three at the waterworks. The ultimate capacity of the plant will be 2.000,000 gallons a day.

Although the plant is only partly in operation an improvement in the quality of the water has already been reported, and it is expected that when the plant is in full operation about May the quality of Invercargill water will compare favourably with any in New Zealand.

The installation of the plant is largely due to the efforts of the previous Mayor of Invercargill (Mr John Miller), who took a keen and active interest in the city water supply and only last year made a special visit to Wellington to hasten the operation of the legal and financial machinery that would enable the city to finance the work.
