NO WARNING OF FLUSHING

LACK OF COURTESY ALLEGED PROTEST MADE BY CR A. W. JONES Charging the city engineering staff with lack of courtesy in flushing out the water mains without first warning the public, Cr A. W. Jones mentioned at last night’s meeting of the Invercargill City Council several complaints he had received from residents of Georgetown.

“No private enterprise would think of doing such a disgraceful thing,” declared Cr Jones. “There is a growing feeling in Invercargill that you can’t get courtesy from the engineering department.” There was a protest from Cr F. A; Webb.

“I don’t care what Cr Webb says,” said Cr Jones. “I am stating facts. I would be failing in my duty as a councillor if I did not mention it.” Cr Jones moved that the engineer’s departrhent be instructed to notify the public through the Press or the radio when it proposed to flush the mains. The motion was seconded by Cr R. T. Parsons.

The assistant city engineer (Mr R. P. Fish) explained that there were certain difficulties in the way of notifying the public when mains were to be flushed out, as it was a stand-by job.

Cr F. A. Webb moved an amendment that the matter be dealt with by the Works Committee.

Cr Jones agreed, with the consent of the council, to withdraw his motion, and the amendment was carried as the motion.
