LABOURER KILLED BY FALL OF EARTH

COMPANION NOT INJURED (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 21. Caught in a fall of earth at the Takapuna quarry this afternoon, a labourer suffered internal injuries from which he died a few minutes later. The victim was Luka Yulavich, single, aged 42, of Takapuna. With another man, Yulavich was loading scoria into a standing lorry. A sudden fall occurred and Yulavich was thrown heavily against the end of the vehicle and jammed between it and the earth. Yulavich died before any attention could be given him. He was a Dalmatian who had been in New Zealand for about 14 years. The other man was standing on the other side of the lorry and was not caught by the fall. MAORI CHILD DROWNED ROTORUA, March 21. An 18-months old Maori child, Hona Hetekia Waaka, was drowned by falling into a hot pool at Whakarewarewa late on Monday afternoon. The accident was not reported to the police until the following day. The mother of the child left it playing in the house while she was absent for about a quarter of an hour and on her return found that the child had disappeared. Upon making a search she found that the child had fallen into a pool near the house. The pool was about two feet deep and was used for washing clothes by the natives in the neighbourhood. The child was dead when discovered. A verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned by the Coroner, Mr W. L Richards, at the inquest today.
