DOMINIONS SAID TO BE ANXIOUS

British Statement On Defence SUPPORT IN EVENT OF ATTACK (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received March 16, 8.10 p.m.) LONDON, March 16. Referring in the House of Lords to his visit to New Zealand and Australia, Lord Strabolgi, the Labour peer, said he found that a deplorable effect had been produced by the speech by the Prime Minister (Mr- Neville Chamberlain) last year in which he said the Government’s tasks in defence were home territory, trade routes and any oversea territories which were attacked. This had been misunderstood, being Regarded as chronological, said Lord Strabolgi. The Dominions thought that they would be the last to be supported in the case of an attack. “Our anxiety in the Great War was to induce our enemies to go to sea,” said Lord Strabolgi. “I suggested to my friends in New Zealand and Australia that there would be great joy at Whitehall if it were heard that a hostile squadron was bound for the South Pacific, for it is just what we want.” The mischief aiose from Mr Chamberlain’s unfortunate phraseology, and the matter should be put right as soon as possible, said Lord Strabolgi.
