PUBLIC-SPIRITED CITIZEN

REFERENCE MADE TO MR ANDREW BAIN APPRECIATION EXPRESSED BY HOSPITAL BOARD ‘ Reference to the death of Mr Andrew Bain was made by the chairman (Mr T. Golden) at yesterday’s meeting of the Southland Hospital Board. “By the death last month of Mr Andrew Bain, of Georgetown, the community has lost an outstanding public-spirited man who gave splendid local body service over a long period of years,” said Mr Golden. ‘He was mayor of the city of Invercargill and the borough of South Invercargill, chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board, a city councillor and, I think, a member of the Education Board. He was also a member of the old Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, representing at that time the suburban boroughs of Invercargill, for a period of 10 years, from December 1898 to December 1908. During the whole of that time he was chairman of the board. “He took a very active and keen interest in the control of the board’s affairs and gave splendid service in the building and development of the home at Lome Farm for elderly people and children. During his term of office the Old People’s Home in Bowmont street, Invercargill, was closed and the inmates and staff transferred, to Lome Farm, this being at that time the only institution under the direct control of the board.” The secretary (Mr T. Pryde) also expressed his appreciation of Mr Bain’s services in the early days of the board. A motion of sympathy was passed.
