To The Editor Sir,—The poor benighted ancients had a maxim, “Fiat justitia, ruat coelum.” Let justice be done, though the heavens fall. We have advanced far beyond the ancients. Now the question of justice does not arise. We ask: “Will such and such an action lead to a major war?” If so, then such action, whether just or unjust, is wrong. What is a major war? The Germans, the Italians, the Chinese, the Spaniards, the Japanese, the Russians and the 20 other nations might all be fighting furiously, but still there would be no major war. A major war is one in which the British are involved. Let us save our skins at all costs. Yet I seem to have read somewhere, “Fear not them that kill the body, but fear him who is able . . . —Yours, etc., J. P. DAKIN. March 15, 1939.
