SCHOOL PICNIC RESULTS OF BABY SHOW ( The Waikana School picnic was held on Mr D. Sinclair’s property. The day was fine and sunny and the picnic was a most successful one. Visitors were present from Gore, Mataura and surrounding districts and it was estimated that over 300 persons were present. These included a number of old inhabitants of the district. The baby show attracted a good deal of attention, as also did a competition for the oldest competitors, which was won by Mr James Crawford. The committee extended thanks to Mesdames F. Richardson and H. Udy, Messrs A. Meikle and A. Marshall for running free conveyances and the retailers of Gore and Mataura and others who gave prizes. WAIMUMU WOMEN’S INSTITUTE A meeting of the Waimumu Women’s Institute was held in the hall. Mrs G. Smith presided. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of sympathy to Mrs P. McLean, members standing in silence as a mark of respect for the late Mr McLean. The balance-sheet, which was read and received, showed a very satisfactory credit balance. During the afternoon a presentation was made to Miss A. Copland, who is shortly to be married. The monthly vegetable competition was won by Mrs Miller. Mrs F. Smith won the flower competition. Mrs Forbes won the baby’s knitted singlet competition. The following office-bearers were elected:—President, Mrs .G. Smith; vice-presidents, Mesdames McGill and Miller; secretary, Mrs Hayward; treasurer, Mrs Robertson; committee, Mesdames Forbes, C. Johnston, R. Johnston and Miss Copland.
