CALEDONIAN SOCIETY At a meeting of the Caledonian Society, the president, Mr D. Casey, occupied the chair and the following members were present: Messrs E. W. Stevens, A. P. Scobie, E. Black, A. George, J. T. Ginivan, A. Stewart and J. H. McMath (life members). Messrs W. Orr, Fraser Munro, and N. Nicholl, members of the school committee, and Mr A. C. Witting, head teacher, were also associated with the committee. The forthcoming schools’ sports were discussed. Mr Witting reported that the programme of events had been forwarded to the various schools in the district. It was agreed that Mr R. Kirk, Winton, be asked to judge the skipping events. The secretary was instructed to purchase the miniature cups required. The suggestion that a parade of the competitors be held was favourably received, and it was left to Mr Witting to make arrangements. Arrangements were completed for the dance to be held on the night of the sports and the following officials were appointed: Door, Messrs D. Casey, A. Stewart and A. P. Scobie; masters of ceremonies, Messrs A. Liddell and A. George. HARVESTING WORK The harvest is well under way and some good yields of fescue have been reported. In common with other districts, the ryegrass returns have been very discouraging to growers. Hay harvesting has been completed and the big numbers of hay stacks to be seen on the various farms should supply an abundance of feed for the stock during the winter months. On one farm property, nine big hay stacks estimated to contain between 200 and 300 tons of hay, are to be seen. These stacks are all covered and present a pleasing and tidy sight.
