Spartan’s Engagement Cancelled A. E. ELLIS TO RIDE BEAUPARTIR (Special to The Times) CHRISTCHURCH, March 14. The outside of the course proper was opened yesterday and again today for the use of horses racing at Trentham and Waimate this week. The Trentham representatives, which were shipped north tonight, were given useful work with sprints home. Night Dress and Capricious covered a mile in 1.43 and Asset and Not Out sprinted half a mile well m 0.49 4-5. Night Dress and Asset will be ridden at Waimate by J. Jennings. A jiuer has not yet been secured for Not Out at' Trentham.

Dictate and Kilrobe were again companions over seven furlongs. They kept abreast for half the journey and then Dictate always kept half a length in front, finishing strongly in 1.29 3-5. Dictate went exceptionally well and should make some return at Trentham. It was proposed to take him to Awapuni after Trentham, but his nomination was overlooked. Bright Prospect was always in front of Cape Gabo and Pladie throughout seven furlongs in 1.30 4-5. This trio will meet again in the high-weight event at Waimate. „ L « Plumage and Dranoel reeled off halt a mile in 0.50 and similar tasks were executed by Real Lady in 0.51 2-5 and Ferriby and Rebel Chief in 0.51. E. Ellis, Haughty Winner, Lustral, Improvident, Beaupartir; M. Caddy, Moorsotis, Lady Leigh, Dictate; A. Stokes, Density; B. Morris, Royal Chief. Spartan was an acceptor for the first day at Trentham and it was intended to race Master Hotspur in the Challenge Stakes on the second day, but the latter has not done well in the last week and T. H. Gillett has cancelled the trip with his pair. Arctic Star is a daily attendant to the Riccarton tracks in charge of C. Dawson, who has leased the gelding from Mr A. Syme. Dawson has devoted a lot of time and patience in an endeavour to get him sound enough to race again. A decision about which race Haughty Winner will contest at Trentham on Friday has not yet been made, but A. E. Ellis has arranged to ride him in either event. On his two good performances on the course in January he cannot be considered harshly treated in , either of his . engagements.
