LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE

HEAVY ENTRY OF STORE SHEEP BIGGEST YARDING THIS SEASON IMPROVED PRICES FOR FAT WETHERS The yarding of store sheep at the weekly Lorneville stock sale yesterday was the biggest this season. Although there were 8208 sheep of this class entered, the demand for young sorts was good.'Feed lambs in this section sold well at late rates, but ewe lambs did not meet with the same competition, being easier by from 1/- to 1/6. Cows comprised most of the yarding of fat cattle, some of which were of good quality. Good bullocks and heifers were in short supply. The sale was a bright one and this could be attributed to the short yarding and country orders. The yarding of fat sheep was smaller than last week, wethers being about 1/6 above the average prices ruling then. The entries -in the individual sections at the last two sales are

Two dairy cows, two bulls and 12 vealers were included in yesterday’s yarding. STORE SHEEP The yarding of store sheep was the largest of the season, there being more than 8000 offered. The demand for young sheep was good, but failingmouth ewes and one-year ewes were harder to quit. Feed lambs sold well at late rates, but there was not the same competition for ewe lambs, these being easier from 1/- to 1/6. Best 2-th ewes sold at up to 33/3, medium 29/to 31/-, with small sorts bringing 26/to 27/6, and cull sorts down to 20/-. Best sound-mouth ewes sold up to 21/4, with other bringing from 17/- to 19/-, according to breeding and condition. One-year ewes realized from 12/- to 15/-, while best f. and f. ewes made up to 10/-, with cull sorts from 2/- to 3/-. Forward-conditioned wether lambs brought up to 16/4, with other selling at from 13/- to 15/-. Small mixed-sex lambs brought from 9/- to 11/6, while best ewe lambs realized up to 21/-, others making from 17/6 to 19/-. A fair business was done in the private selling of rams, Southdowns realizing from 6| to 7jgn, Ryelands from 6 to 7gn. The demand for rams at auction, however, was lifeless, quite a few pens of useful rams being sold at from 5/- to 10/-. An advertised line of stud Southdown ewes sold at from 2 to Sign.

FAT CATTLE The yarding of rat cattle consisted chiefly of cows, some of which were of quite good quality, but the majority were aged and unfinished. Good bullocks and heifers were in short supply. Because ,of the short yarding and country orders the sale was a bright one, better quality sorts improving by about 20/- a head over last week. Good quality, medium-weight bullocks realized £ll 10/- to £l2 10/-, handyweights £lO 10/- to £ll, lighter £9 to £lO. Prime heavy-weight cows made up to £ll 2/6, good quality £8 10/- to £9 10/-, medium £7 to £B, inferior £5 5/- to £6, aged and unfinished £4 to £4 10/-. FAT SHEEP There was a smaller yarding of fat sheep, with only a small percentage of wethers. Export buyers operated freely for ewes at a maximum of 8/-, while butchers secured their requirements at from 8/6 to 13/- for good young sorts. Wethers were about 1/6 above last week’s average prices. Prime quality sorts sold at from 22/6 to 23/9, medium quality 20/- to 21/-, unfinished 18/- to 19/-, small lightweights down to 15/-. The fat lamb entry was also a small one, but there was keen competition and values were right up to export schedule rates. Heavy butchers’ lambs made up to 28/9, the majority of the freezing weights 20/- to 21/6, with light and unfinished from 17/- to 18/6. SMALL YARDING AT GORE ONLY CATTLE OFFERED There was a small yarding at the Gore stock sale yesterday, cattle only being offered. Fat cows and heifers brought up to £7. Oamaru yesterday. Two-tooth ewes realized up to 31/7. There was a very good demand for store lambs, of which the market is bare, and the prices ranged from 12/- to 14/-. A line of 1100 Romney full and failing-mouth ewes brought 10/-.
