COMPETITION CRICKET

MATCHESPLAYED ON SATURDAY Appleby’s Four-Point Win

MARIST BEATEN BY UNION

INVERCARGILL’S VICTORY ON FIRST INNINGS

The Southland Cricket Association’s senior competition was continued on Saturday in fine but windy weather. Appleby secured a four-point win over Old Boys on the High School ground, and Union beat Marist on the first innings on the Appleby ground. Playing at Biggar street Invercargill beat Bluff on the first innings. There were no big scores on Saturday, the best individual effort being Brittenden’s 60 for .Marist against Union. Bowlers, however, had a field day and I. Bynett, the Bluff slow lefthander, took eight wickets for 54. The Appleby bowlers, Purdue and C. McKenzie, were also successful. BEST PERFORMANCES Batting G. Brittenden (Marist) 60 H. Mclvor (Bluff) 30 E. Robinson (Invercargill) 30 P. Grace (Marist) 28 Bowling I. Barnett (Bluff) eight for 54 N. McGowan (Marist) six for 40 T. McKenzie (Invercargill) six for 43. J. Purdue (Appleby) five for 22. G. Marshall (Union) five for 26. C. McKenzie (Appleby) five for 31. J. Derbie (Marist) four for 66. Fraser (Marist) two for nine.

GOOD BOWLING BY I. BARNETT BLUFF TEAM BEATEN BY INVERCARGILL Invercargill had a first innings lead of 28 runs on Bluff when play was resumed on Saturday, the city team continuing its first innings. Oliver, who opened with Saxton the previous week, had failed to score, <.nd Saxton and Service continued to bat. Saxton had increased his total by another 10 when I. Barnett, the slow left-hander, bowled him. Service did not last much longer, but a fine stand by Robinson and Pollok added 44 runs to the Invercargill total, bringing the score from 24 to 68 before Pollok lifted one into Nixey’s hands off I. Barnett. Robinson’s 30 provided an attractive exhibition in which the batsman showed a variety of shots, anl came at the right time to stiffen up the Invercargill batsmen, Sharp helped the score along with a useful 10 and Munro followed with another 10, and the innings concluded with art attractively played 18 by A. Spence, the last man in.

All but two of the Invercargill wickets were taken by I. Barnett at a cost of only 54 runs an improvement on his performance of five for 41 the previous week. Altogether Barnett has taken 13 wickets for 95 runs in this match—an outstanding performance in senior cricket.

An opening partnership between I.

Barnett and Mclvor which produced 50 runs made it appear that Bluff would offer a serious challenge to Invercargill, but Nixey was the only other batsman to reach double figures, and the side was dismissed for 87. Six of the Bluff wickets fell to McKenzie for 43 runs and Sharp took two. Details:— INVERCARGILL First innings 95 Second Innings C. K. Saxton b I. Barnett 14 J. Oliver cR. Barnett bI. Barnett 0 E. UNION TAILENDERS FAIL MARIST BEATEN ON FIRST INNINGS Union, with three wickets down for 144, appeared to be making a big score when play was resumed against Marist on the Appleby ground on Saturday. Hamilton and Swinney, the not-out men, continued their innings, but neither added very much to his total, and none of the other batsmen succeeded in reaching double figures. The side was dismissed for 181, the other eight batsmen contributing only 37 runs. . , The bowling honours were carried off by McGowan, who, finding a good length, kept the Union batsmen on the defensive, taking six wickets for 40 runs. The other four fell to Derbie for 66. ■ , , Fraser and Ryan opened for Marist, but the former failed to score and ms place was taken by P- Grace, the Partnership producing 46 runs. Brittenden and Derbie also added valuable contributions to the total, the fonner striking something of his old form ana scoring a vigorous 60 which included a six and half-a-dozen fours. He was caught behind the wicket by Poole off Uttley. The partnership produced 67 runs. McGowan also gave a stylish display for 17, but the tail-enders failed to maintain the standard and the innings closed for 166. Of the bowlers Marshall was the most successful, taking five wickets for 26 in nine and a-half overs. . Union, to score a four-point win, had an hour in which to make 90 runs, but was unable to make the necessary pace, and six wickets had fallen for 63 when time was called. Swinney was going well at 21, but was unfortunate in being fun out. Union won on the first innings. Details: .
