SHORTAGE OF LABOUR IN GERMANY

LONGER HOURS AND HARDER WORK INDICATED BERLIN, February 9. Germany’s need for more labour for industry is dealt with in an official report in which there is a hint of longer hours and harder work. Last year’s new sources included 150,000 workers combed from the unemployed and 670,000 mobilized from domestic employees and pensioners. In spite of this it is estimated that there will be a deficiency of 1,000,000 workers in 1939, for which rationalization and a more intense use of existing labour will be needed.
