Shadow Son and Kewpie’s Jewel entered the straight together with Contender swinging out to challenge and Auto Bingen alongside. Contender finished best and won by a neck from Shadow Son, Kewpie’s Jewel (galloping), one length and a-half back. Auto Bingen was fourth. The third and fourth placings were reversed. After leading for the greater part of the distance True Trust was beaten out of a place, the winner being Sir Frank, -who came from the rear to a surprise victory. WITHDRAWAL OF DON WALLA Although Don Walla was withdrawn from the Waiheke Handicap at Epsom

on Saturday after the closing of the totalizator and was therefore officially a starter, the investments on him were returned by the Auckland ' Trotting Club following his withdrawal. An official statement of the position was made in the presence of the president of the club. Mr E. G. Bridgens. “No horse is allowed to go to the post with an assistant other than the starter’s assistant, excepting with the permission of the stewards Special permission was given for a man to go to the post with Don Walla. At the barrier' the starter refused permission to the attendant to act because he had not been officially advised. He sent N. Cunningham, the owner-drivei,- to the stipendiary steward to get permission. This immediately was forthcoming but Cunningham elected to withdraw his horse. The totalizator having been closed, no withdrawal of the moneys on the horse could be permitted. The' club made the announcement before the race that the investments would be returned in full. The club therefore was put to a loss of £301.”

An inquiry is to be held on Monday

A. W. Broughton, driver of Tumble, was severely cautioned for careless driving in the Waiheke Handicap, causing interference with Scottish Bard. The stipendiary steward made full inquiries into the accident in the Otahuhu Handicap in which Sandusky and Bexley Girl were implicated but it was announced that there was insufficient evidence to justify further action. , HANDICAPS FOR SECOND DAY > ’ • (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 12.
