HIGH SCHOOL CADETS
WEEK OF TRAINING The year’s work began for Southland High School boys with a week in the open air. The time was spent. in cadet training and physical exercises under the school staff and non-com-missioned officer, assisted by Lieut. A. R. Cockerill, D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C., and Staff Sergeant-Major Little and Sergeant Gibb, of the permanent staff. The enthusiasm with which the work has proceeded was the result of the courses of instruction attended at Burnham during the holidays by all the officers and at Waikouaiti by 11 of the noncommissioned officers. The cadet unit, under Major H. W. Slater, V.D., is organized into three companies—A Company under Captain J. Page with Lieuts. J. Braithwaite and G. Geddes; B Company under Lieut A. R. Dunlop with Lieut. A. H. Robins, and Headquarters Company, under Captain H. Drees. This company comprises, the Drum, Trumpet and Bugle Band, under Lieut. L. J. Napier, a bearer section under Lieut. Begg, and a signal section There has also been shooting instruction on the miniature range under Lieut. Geddes. Weather permitting, the course will conclude at three oclock this afternoon when a battalion assembly parade and march past will take place, headed by the band, which has been practising assiduously and has regained the standard set in its public appearances last year.
