RIFLE SHOOTING

Macauley Shield Won By Invercargill

TEAMS MATCH FIRED AT MOSSBURN The first competition for the McCauley Challenge Shield presented by Mr G. Macauley, of Mossburn, was fired on the Mossbum rifle range on Saturday. More than 60 riflemen from Southland clubs attended the meeting, 12 teams of five men each competing over distances of 600, 800 and 900 yards. Excellent weather prevailed. A gusty right front wind kept the team coaches busy especially at the long ranges where sudden wind changes caused many failures. At 600 yards the City Guards team led with a score of 159. Invercargill A followed closely with 156. Gore was third with 149 and Tapanui and Mossburn A tied for fourth place with 148. Starting the long ranges at 800 yards, Invercargill A scored 147. which gave it a lead of one point on City Guards. Both Gore and Tapanui failed at this distance and Mossbum A, with the top range score of 149, came up to third position. Before going down at 900 yards the scores of the three leading teams were: Invercargill A 303, City Guards 302, Mossbum A 297. With only six points separating the first and third teams and conditions rather tricky for long-range shooting the result was in doubt until the last man in the Mossbum team had fired. Shooting steadily at 900 yards, the Invercargill A team scored 149, bringing its total to 452. Mossburn A made 147, which brought it into second place with a total of 444 and City Guards with 140 and a total of 442 filled third place. The newly-formed Mossburn Club is to be congratulated on its excellent performance. SHIELD PRESENTED At the conclusion of the competition the president of the Mossburn Club (Mr E. P. Healey) presented the shield to the winning team, and a trophy for the highest score over the three ranges to Mr A. R. Wills, who made 97 ’points. Mr Wills in replying to the president’s address, complimented the Mossbum Club on its excellent range which is the only range in Southland with facilities for shooting over distances up to 900 yards. Mr W. McChesney, City Guards, congratulated the Mossburn team on its fine performance in gaining second place against such strong teams as were present. The shooting was carried out under the supervision of Mr W- J. Blatch, range officer, and Mr J. Blatch and Mr P. Mcßride were responsible for the secretarial work. An efficient team of markers under Mr D. Bryan deserves great praise for its work at the butts. The competitors at the conclusion of the meeting gave three cheers for the donor of the shield and the officers responsible for the conduct of the meeting. Details are: *
