Mrs Robertson Open Champion

TOURNAMENT ALMOST COMPLETED

The finals of the Southland open croquet championships were brilliant sunshine on the Northend Club's lawns yesterday. The lawns were in perfect order and the games were of a high standard. Mrs T. Robertson, of the Northend Club, won the open championship from Mrs D. Strang, of the Southland Club, in the best of three games by 26 points to 21 in two of the games. In the first game Mrs Robertson made three and missed. Mrs Strang, taking full advantage of this, made a break of seven, failing at two back, Mrs Strang going to the boundary. Mrs Robertson made two hoops and missed a short croquet, letting her opponent in to make three hoops. Mrs Robertson hit in a long roquet and made one hoop. Mrs Strang missed, and this let Mrs Robertson make two more hoops, failing at one back. Mrs Strang hit a long roquet, made two back with one ball and finished with a rush for her other. Mrs. Robertson missed, Mrs Strang making three hoops. Mrs Strang at a critical time gave her opponent a baulk ball, and Mrs Robertson finished a hard game 26-21. , The second game also was hard. Mrs Robertson opened play and made two hoops. Mrs Strang hit in a long roquet and made four hoops, Mrs Robertson missing. Her opponent carried one clip to three back and in the next turn to penultimate. Mrs Robertson took hit, hit it and made one. Mrs Robertson hit in and made a good four-ball break from second hoop to rover, wiring her opponent at stick. Mrs Strang hit in, but went boundary, letting Mrs Robertson in to make the remaining hoop. She failed to peg out one ball. Mrs Strang went to rover with a three-ball break. Mrs Robertson hit the stick and won the game 26-21. It is hoped to complete the tournament this morning. The Results of yesterdays games were:—
