SECOND DAY AT WINGATUI

Hazlett Gold Cup To

Be Run

ROYAL CHIEF A FIRM FAVOURITE

BOSWELL IN JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP

(From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, February 10.

A fast track is again assured for the second day .of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s autumn meeting tomorrow, for which excellent fields are listed. The feature event will be the James Hazlett Gold Cup, a weight-for-age race over a mile, which has drawn five runners. The weather in Dunedin was fine today and there is every promise of it continuing for tomorrow’s programme. The win-ana-place system of betting will operate and the same starting times as the first day will be observed, with the first race at 12.30 p.m.

Royal Chief heads the weights in the Hazlett Gold Cup with 9.10 and in spite of his Dunedin Cup failure he promises to be a firm favourite. He will be improved by th= race he had yesterday and run over a mile he will be given a great chance. Before he left Riccarton earlier in the week Royal Chief ran seven furlongs on the plough in Imin 27 l-ssec, and this was considered a great trial. Tomorrow he meets Queen .of Song on 141bs better terms and Wild Chase on 51bs better terms than when they defeated him on Thursday. At these figures he should beat the pair. Wild Chase can be relied on to run out a great mile and appeals more over this

journey than Queen of Song. Top Row is engaged in the sprint earlier in the day and he may not start here while Atua Rere has not shown sufficient form to recommend him in a field of this class. BOSWELL IN FAVOUR With both Queen of Song and Wild Chase out of the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, Argentic who finished in thira place behind this pair in the Dunedin Cup will have to be considered. Usually he tails in behind in all his races but yesterday he was taken to the front and made all the pace. Alma won the Invercargill Cup over 10 furlongs in her last appearance and is not without a chance. She cannot, however, be regarded as a genuine stayer. Nightwings will be better suited by the shorter journey while Galleon will be improved by yesterday’s race. Mona’s Song is in great order at the present time and the distance will not trouble her. Wild Career is engaged in the sprint and of those further down the list Boswell and Thermidor have the best credentials. Boswell always comes up a better horse after a race and as one who promises to make a great name for himself as a stayer he will be given a chance here. Recollection is certain to be a firm favourite for the Owhiro Hurdles Handicap. He did not start yesterday but has won the last three hurdle races he has contested. Western Song, who was twice second to Recollection at Invercargill, will again be the hardest for the topweight to beat. McHeath would not require to improve much on yesterday’s form to have a chance and Slayer is always capable of showing up. Crack o’ Dawn was narrowly beaten by Our Pal over seven furlongs yesterday and in the Novice Handicap, a furlong shorter, she should take some heading. She is a speedy filly and makes no hesitation about jumping out. Sunny Jean has no chance on yesterday’s form but Spearthrust is a possibility. Of the others Neptune is the most likely. FLYING HANDICAP Second Innings is well placed in the Flying Handicap and on the strength of his fine finishing run in the Publicans’ Handicap he should again show up. He is a better horse over seven furlongs than six and with Counterblast missing from this field he reads well. Top Row will have to improve greatly on yesterday’s form and the same can be said for Rodeur. Toro Koura is not out of it and is one of the form horses in this field. Norseman is well up to this class but he cannot afford to give any of them a start and expect to beat them home. Wild Career is a possibility if he races up to his first day’s form and the journey will play right into his hands. Phalanx has the best form of the others.

The Abbotsford Handicap is the most open race of the day. Strip is a newcomer but Tapanui running does not give him much chance. Teak, Spartan and Synthetic all raced well enough yesterday to warrant their being supported in this field. Disband, Flagman and Combat will assist to make this one of the most difficult races of the day. Master Hotspur has been raised 41bs in the Hopeful Handicap run over a furlong shorter. He should again take a power of beating, although he is meeting Aranui on 71bs worse terms. The latter, will, however, require to jump out much more smartly over the shorter distance to have any chance. Montessa will run a smart five and Asia is another likely to be fancied over this journey. She did not run the first day. Moorsotis cannot be condemned for his first day’s failure and can be expected to give a much better account of himself.

Settlement is a much better stayer than he showed over a mile yesterday and in the Waihola Handicap he may make a bold showing. Capricious raced well enough the first day to have a chance while Glenacre and Half and Half are two newcomers likely to add interest to proceedings. Of the others Auctor, Passaform and Straightdel have the best credentials. HORSES IN FORM Support will come for the following:— OWHIRO HURDLES.—Recollection, Western Song. NOVICE HANDICAP.—Crack o’ Dawn, Spearthrust, Neptune. FLYING HANDICAP.—Second Innings, Toro Koura, Wild Career.

DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP.—BosweII, Galleon, Mona’s Song. ABBOTSFORD HANDlCAP.—Synthetic, Spartan, Teak. HOPEFUL HANDICAP.—Master Hotspur, Moorsotis, Montessa. HAZLETT GOLD CUP.—Royal Chief, Wild Chase.

WAIHOLA HANDlCAP.—Capricious, Settlement, Half and Half. The acceptances are as follows:—

OWHIRO HURDLES HANDICAP, £175. One mile and a-half.
