BOSWELL WILL DO BETTER

Western Song’s Win Over Hurdles MONA’S SONG’S BIG DIVIDEND (From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, February 10. Atua Rere appeared to have a chance in the President’s Handicap, but his rider lost both his irons. Stopped Kippen was one of the leaders into the straight in the President’s Handicap, but did not carry on. To Resume Riding G. Dempster, a successful Invercargill horseman of a season or two back, intends to resume riding this season. Outstayed Settlement has always been regarded as a useful stayer, but Spartan outstayed him in the President’s Handicap. Finishing On

After losing several lengths in the early stages of the Champagne Stakes Aranui was finishing on from the back. Three Winners

The Southland sire, Songbird, was represented by three winners—Queen of Song, Mona’s Song and Western Song, at Wingatui yesterday. Favourite Missing

Recollection, a firm pre-post favourite for the Warrington Hurdle Handicap, made the trip from Riccarton to Wingatui, but for some reason or other he was not produced. There was nothing amiss with the Polazel gelding and no reason for his withdrawal has been given. Unrehearsed

Before the start of the Berwick Handicap, Combat, who was ridden by the apprentice, R. E. Humphries, broke away and galloped a couple of furlongs before he could be pulled up. This unrehearsed preliminary appeared to cost him a good winning chance as he only weakened over the last half-furlong after being well placed in the running tight through. Not Fancied

Auctor was not fancied in the betting for the President’s Handicap and, after being one of the leaders for five furlongs, he dropped right out. Blissful Lady

Because of a bandage being tied too tightly Blissful Lady had a slightly swollen fetlock when worked at Wingatui yesterday morning, and this was the reason for her non-apffearance at the meeting. It was not serious and she will be iraced tomorrow.

Frightened Out The general consensus of opinion was that Royal Chief with 9.8 was about a stone too lightly weighted in the Dunedin Cup. His presence in the field was probably responsible for the number of starters being reduced to six, but the Chief Ruler horse was last to finish. Not Sighted

Not at any stage of the running in the Berwick Handicap did Spanish Lad show up, while Waitoru was another Southlander who did not threaten danger.

Solid Support Although she had shown little form there was good money to say that Pilot’s Love would win the Trial Handicap, but she did not flatter her supporters.

Not Extended It would be difficult to imagine a more decisive success than that scored by Counterblast in the Publicans’ Handicap. She did not have to be ridden out over the last furlong.

Will Be Improved Royal Chief lacked the seasoned racing condition of his opponents in the Dunedin Cup and the race will have improved him. He was well enough placed at the top of the straight to have won, but he was well beaten at this stage. Galleon Galleon was always bringing up the rear in the Dunedin Cup and when he improved his position across the top it looked as though he would play a big part in the finish, but his fourth placing was only a moderate one.

Outstanding Colt Master Hotspur is an outstanding colt in every way. He has the carriage, the action and the make-up of a champion. The Ringmaster two-year-old gave the field in the Champagne Stakes little chance from barrier rise and now that he is at the top of his form again he can be expected to win again at short notice.

Useful Placing There was a lot of merit in Thermidor’s second to Mona’s Song in the Stewards’ Handicap. Thermidor was badly placed in the early stages and was well back in seventh or eighth

place at the straight entrance. She secured a good run on the rails over the last furlong and was the only one to make a race of it with the winner. Foxlove

Foxlove was a surprise deletion from the Dunedin Cup field as the Gallant Fox gelding left Invercargill on Wednesday fit and well. When being exercised yesterday morning he injured a hip muscle and was unable to be produced in the Cup and has not recovered sufficiently to permit him to start tomorrow. Will Improve

McHeath was doing good work at the finish of the Warrington Hurdle Handicap and he promises to take some beating tomorrow. Frequently he has shown better form on the second day of a meeting. Unlucky

Synthetic and Elagman were two unlucky runners in the Berwick Handicap as both were interfered with at the start and lost a good amount of ground. In a big field they were set a difficult task and the pair did well to finish close up behind the placed horses. Synthetic was regarded as a certainty in some quarters. Finished Last

Rodeur has earned a great record for consistency in her races this season, but in the Publicans’ Handicap she was actually last to finish. Left Again

J. W. Jenkins, who rode Norseman in the Publicans’ Handicap, once again missed the jump out and from then on had no chance. In hack fields Norseman was able to give away starts and then win, but it is a different proposition when opposed to high-class sprinters. False Price

Mona’s Song was permitted to go out at a false price when she won the Stewards’ Handicap, for which Boswell was a short-priced favourite. Monas Song was always handy to the leaders and when taken to the front immediately heads were turned for home she made no race of it. Considering that she was discussed as a likely Dunedin Cup candidate it was surprising to find her going out as 9-8 in the order of favouritism. Staying Blood

Our Pal has been raced more than most three-year-olds and his success in the Trial Handicap yesterday was not out of turn. He won by staying on and over the last furlong he worried Crack o’ Dawn out of .it. Our Pal is bred to be a champion and he may later make a name for himself as a stayer. By the New Zealand Cup winner, Nightmarch, by Nightraid from Marsa, by Martian, his/dam, Palantua, was also returned a New Zealand Cup winner. Palantua was got by Paladin from Mantua, so a wealth of stamina is represented close up in these lines. Creditable Showing

Baitruin put up quite a creditable showing in his first appearance as a hurdler in the Warrington Handicap. He jumped well right through and looked like finishing third when Slayer got up to beat him on the post for this placing. Unusual Finding

The finding of the judicial committee after the running of the Warrington Hurdles was an unusual one. It stated: “After consideration the committee decided that it was not satisfied that T. J. Bole (rider of Baitruin) failed to ride his mount out and that he should not be accused of that offence, but it was satisfied that he had been caught napping and was fined £1 for overconfidence.”

Solidly Supported Boswell was a solid favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap, but he lost any chance he had by missing the jump out. He had to be persuaded to walk up to the barrier and when the field was despatched he lost several lengths. He secured a good run on the rails in getting to within range of the leaders and was fairly well placed at the straight entrance. His earlier effort had taken a lot out of him, however, and he did not finish on. The race will have improved him and he reads as one of the best prospects on tomorrow’s card. First Success Western Song won his first race as a hurdler when he led the field in the Warrington Handicap home, in which he ran one of the best races of his career. A fine display of horsemanship by V. Langford was an important factor in his success. Langford always had a good hold of the erratic Songbird gelding and he jumped faultlessly right through. He was able to give him a breather at the far turn and when asked for an effort in the run home he stayed on well. In most of his races he is beaten a long way from home by his tear-away tactics, but yesterday his rider nursed him all the way. On this form he is capable of winning again. Interfered With Apart from Norseman and Valmarch who n?issed the jump out the field in the Publicans’ Handicap raced in line for almost a furlong and a-half down the back stretch. Wild Career and then Second Innings dropped back, and both appeared to strike some trouble. Second Innings finished with a great run for third and Wild Career made up a lot of ground to be close up fifth. Neither, would have had any chance with the winner, Counterblast, but better placed three furlongs from home they would have been much closer at the finish.
