In Town And Out

Reconstruction of Stead Street The reconstruction of Stead street will probably begin early next week. The contract, which was let some weeks ago, has now been signed and the contractor has completed his preparations to start the work.

Work on Bridge Work has begun on the construction of a new bridge over the Oreti river on Bay road, according to the report of the engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) presented to a meeting of the Southland County Council yesterday. “The penetration of. the piles was easier than was expected, and to obtain sufficient bearing for the weight of the structure it will be necessary to add an extra pile to each pier set,” the report stated. First Tepid Baths In City

The Invercargill municipal baths were not, as is generally believed, the first tepid baths in the city. In the nineties, a concrete pool was constructed by the Invercargill Swimming Club, now defunct, at the west end of Tweed street, where the Port Craig Timber Company’s premises now stand. Salt water was pumped from the estuary by a donkey engine and heated in steam boilers. The pool, which was roofed over, was about 20 yards long and 30 feet wide, and some successful carnivals were held there. About 1909 the baths were closed as a result of the boilers being condemned.

Fitness Campaign

“I would like the Young Farmers’ Clubs in Southland to co-operate with the Western District committee in helping to make the national physical fitness campaign, to be held from February 18 to February 25, a success,” said the president (Mr W. R. Harris) at a meeting of the Western District committee of the Young Farmers’ Clubs yesterday. The defence of the country should be adequately provided, he said. From a national point of view it was the duty of every citizen to do his part, if necessary, in the defence of the Dominion. The physical fitness campaign was an attempt to improve the health and physique of the people. There was no doubt that the campaign was a move in the right direction and should be strongly supported throughout the country. He hoped that the members of all clubs would do everything to make the campaign successful. Girl Shot at Show

A writ has been issued on behalf of Miss Edna Hay, of New Plymouth, claiming £l2ll damages from the Taranaki Agricultural and Pastoral Society for injuries received when she was shot in the back by a bullet from a shooting gallery on the evening of June 9 at the 1937 winter show. Miss Hay was incapacitated from work from that date of the accident until February of last year. On the evening of the accident, Miss Hay, who was then 18. received a shot in the back when moving along the side-show alley. The bullet passed through a box filled with earth and reinforced with metal plates. Unusual Request

An unusual request for permission to take degree examinations has been granted by the Senate of the University of New Zealand. The application came from a student who is now undergoing reformative detention, and after discussion in committee senate agreed to allow him to sit as an externe. In the minutes recording the decision, the dissent of the Chancellor, the Hon. J. A. Hanan, was recorded at his request.

Glasgow’s Trams “While in most cities in England trams are being superseded by buses, there is one city that has no intention whatever of giving up its trams, and that is Glasgow,” said Mr G. H. Lightfoot, who had just returned to Christchurch from a tour of England and Scotland, states The Press, . Christchurch. “Any suggestion that buses should become the form of transport meets with a violent storm of disapproval, and I have never before encountered such an unanimous and firm determination on one point ” Mr Lightfoot stated that the service was a very fine one. Fares ranged from £d to 2jd, the latter being charged on a route which covered seven miles.
