MATAURA

BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS ANNUAL JUDGING OF STOCK There was a good attendance of club members and parents at the annual judging of stock projects held by the IV.'.taura group of the Southland Boys and Girls’ Clubs Association. The following schools were represented: Brydone, Waikana, Tuturau, and Mataura. The entries comprised 10 ponies, 12 calves, and eight lambs. The judges were: Ponies, Mr J. Carnegy Gardner; Lambs, Mr Matthews, (Education Department); Calves, Mr Irvine.

Messrs K. I. Robertson, organizer, and R. Prydfe, district secretary and supervisor, had everything in readiness for the judging. Points were awarded for (1) care and attention and (2) skill in handling and general knowledge. Each member is required to keep a record book and the final points will be announced at a later date.

The Mataura gathering was favourably commented on by the judges, who had been busy inspecting the stock of club members in various parts of Southland.

The final judging for the Eastern ( District championship in the pet lamb project took place at the Mataura freezing works yesterday at 11 a.m., when some 19 lambs recommended by the judges were brought forward from the following schools: Charlton (2), Pukerau (3), McNab (1), Mataura (2), Brydone (2), Wendon Valley (1), Waikaka Valley (4), Maitland (2), Otama (1), Chatton East (1).

PARADE’OF SCOUTS The final parade of the Mataura troop of Scouts was held in the Salvation Army Hall. The boys paraded at the Scout Hall and marched to the Salvation Army Hall, where they were tr.ated to supper. A big number of the parents was present. Reference to the good work done was made by the chairman, Mr K. Watts. The proceedings were under the .conductorship of Captain Pauling, assisted by Mr Pay. The majority of the boys were in possession of their tender-foot badges, which spoke well for a troop still in its infancy. It is intended to hold a camp at Riverton in the near future. At the end of the parade a committee meeting was held and was attended by the president, Mr K. Watts (chairman) and Messrs G. Folster (secretary), H. Thompson Miller, C. H. Hargest, Ward, C. Peck, C. Hannabus, C. Henry -and G. Burgess. At the end of the meeting, Captain Pauling thanked the committee for its help during the. year and extended the season’s greetings. Mr Watts replied.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The monthly meeting of the Mataura Women’s Institute was well attended by the members. Mrs H. Thompson presided. The roll call was, “Magazines which will be forwarded to Waipiata.” The motto was, “Love not sleep lest thou come to poverty.” Mrs Shorter was appointed convener of a sub-committee to take charge of the McDougall Cup competition next year. Mrs Willcocks was appointed convener of a sub-committee for the institute display at the horticultural show. It was decided to display 12 articles out of the 16 in the industrial section at the show. It was also decided that in the bloom competition the Garden Circle arrange for its own judge each meeting. The president read a letter from “Home and Country” written by Miss Kane, Dominion president.

The following took part in a play reading (“The Followers”): —Mesdames McConnell, S. E. Smith, T. K. Fisher, and Misses C. McConnell and F. Stickles. Most of the afternoon was taken up with a musical entertainment. The following took part:—Mesdames T. P. Bogue, V. H. Ball, T. K. Fisher, S. E. Smith, A. Turner, J. H. Shorter, T. Piercy, and Miss E. Thompson. The conductor was Mrs R. Hutton.

The afternoon’s entertainment ended with carols by the Anglican Church choir. The president extended Christmas greetings to all members. Mrs Shorter replied. Mrs Jarrett thanked all helpers for the successful afternoon. CHRISTMAS PARTY There was a big attendance of returned soldiers, their wives and children at the annual children’s Christmas party which was held on Mr Wilson’s property at Marairua. The weather remained fine and sunny and the outing was a big success. The president of the Mataura Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr S. E. Smith, welcomed the visitors. Mr Smith reminded Mataura members that in the competition for membership, South Otago was well ahead and he hoped Mataura would alter the position. He thanked Mr Wilson for the use of his property, Mr A. Marshall for providing free conveyance, and Sister I. Y. Scott for organizing the catering. Santa Claus appeared on a white horse to the great enjoyment of the children, each of whom received a present. Surprise presents were also given to Sister I. Y. Scott and Miss V. Ross and to the parents with the biggest families.

CRICKET The Mataura senior team enjoyed a further success when it met and beat Pukerau by 152 runs. For Mataura, L. G. Townsend was top-scorer with 55 retired, while J. Leitch 46, R. Clarke 29, and N. Johnston 24, also batted well. Bowling for Pukerau, Valentine, three for 23 and B. Edwards, three for 24, were the most successful bowlers.
