AUCKLAND RETAINS WILDING SHIELD WAIKATO WINS ONLY ONE MATCH (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 18. By winning 11 matches out of 12, Auckland had no difficulty in retaining possession of the Wilding Shield against a challenge by Waikato. The Davis Cup tennis players, J. Bromwich and A. K. Quist, today won the Victorian doubles championship, defeating J. H. Crawford and F. Bennet 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. In the final of the women’s doubles Miss T. Coyne and Miss J. Stevenson defeated Mrs H. O. Hopman and Miss N. Wynne, 6-4, 6-3. The other finals resulted: Men’s Singles.—Quist beat Bromwich, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. Women’s Singles.—Mrs Hopman beat Miss J. Hartigan, 6-8, 6-1, 6-2.
