FIRST EVENT ON SUNDAY BLUFF YACHT CLUB’S RACES SANDERS CUP TRIAL IN AFTERNOON A decision to hold the first of the series of club races next Sunday m °™" ing was made at a meeting of the Blurt Yacht Club on Wednesday night. Lhe first race was to have been held at the official opening of the club last month but had to be abandoned because oi unfavourable weather. It was also decided, in collaboration with the judges, Messrs C. Hansen, O. Johnston and J. R. Colbran, that a further Sanders Cup trial be sailed on the harbour on Sunday afternoon.

The president (Mr A. E. Budd) was chairman. There was a good attendance of members. The club races, said the chairman, would be handicap events and it was hoped that all the 14-footers which sailed in the cup trials would compete. The races were held annually for the trophy presented by Mr F. Cooper, of Bluff. 1 , Reporting on the activities ot the past month, Mr Budd said that the weather had been unfavourable on the opening day, November 19, and the club races had to be postponed. These could be begun at the week-end. The chairman said he had arranged for a sample of the proposed club badge to be ready for the next meeting. “We have received advice that the Southland Swimming Centre has arranged for the Watson Cup race to be held in the Bluff Harbour on January 21,” said Mr Budd. “This event will take place during the Sanders Cup contest week and will be an added attraction. At the last meeting of the club he had drawn members’ attention to the fact that the restricted class in yachting had been somewhat neglected, continued the chairman. The Southland Provincial Yacht and Motor-Boat Association had now offered to pay the cost of transport by rail or its equivalent for all yachts competing m this class in the Bluff regatta. It was decided on the motion of Mr J. Shannon, to give £4 to the association towards the expenses for the Sanders Cup contest. The association submitted a programme of entertainments for the contest week and this was approved by the club. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT There was a big attendance at the weekly euchre tournament, organized by the Bluff Dominican Convent in aid of its funds, which was held in the Willard Hall. The first prize for women went to Mrs A. Plank and IVyS C. Jackson was second. The men’s prize was won by Mr R. Tipene jun. and Mr W. Parry took second place. Mr G. Burton and Mrs W. Lowe won the lucky number competition. The season will conclude this week when the winners of the aggregate competition will be announced. QUIET PORT The port was idle at Bluff yesterday and there were no major shipping movements. There will be no further activity until the arrival on Sunday of the Union Company’s. trans-Tasman passenger liner, Maunganui from Melbourne, via Milford Sound. The weather was showery yesterday and a strong westerly wind was blowing. ? PERSONAL Mr T. K. Bragg, of Half Moon Bay, Stewart Island, arrived by the Tamatea yesterday on a visit to the mainland. ISLAND CHILDREN’S TRIP To fulfil a promise to bring school children from Stewart Island to the mainland for the Southland summer show, the inter-island vessel Tamatea ■made a good run of 15£ hours from Port Chalmers, where she had undergone her annual overhaul, leaving there at 315 p.m. on Tuesday and arriving at Half Moon Bay at 6.45 a.m. the next day. Between 70 and 80 children took advantage of the offer and made the return trip free of charge. About 50 adults also made the excursion.
